Why is it necessary to purchase insurance on a rental car when the credit card being used provides coverage

JohnIf you check with your credit card co they will tell you that they do not cover liability. You need to purchase their liability if you hurt someone then their Dr and Hosp. will be paid. We have made several trips down there and you will want to comply with the insurance requirements. (Very Important) We have never had any problems, but its best to be safe. If you hurt someone and you don't have their liability, you will have to pay cash for their bills before leaving. Coverage is not that expensive. Also, make sure you rent your car on line as it is alot cheaper. We have always used Thrifty. Good rates. If you need an automatic, make sure you state that on line when booking. You can also call their 800 number for booking. First talk to your credit card co and tell them where you are going, they will tell you what your card will pay for in an accident. Another point of information, when leaving the country, notify all the card companies you will be using down there as they may see charges coming in from another country and freeze all charges and you won't be able to use your card. That also includes your debit card. They will put an alert on your card to allow charges for that country during the period of time you will be gone. Hope this helps. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
