Best area close to the beach for retirees

Thank author of this post/commentMy wife and I are researching the prospect of retiring in Panama. For many years we have been visiting Playa del Carmen, Mexico where we own a timeshare and thought of retiring in the area. We have been reading about the pensionado program available in Panama and are thinking it may be better to retire in Panama -vs- Mexico. We like being close to the ocean and are leaning towards the Pacific beach areas of Panama. From what we read it appears the Carribean side of Panama has a problem with mosquitos and we don't like mosquitos. I think we will probably rent for a year or so to make sure we want to make the move permanent before looking at buying a home. For now it looks like areas close to Coronado are more to our liking. Is it imperative that we learn spanish prior to going to Panama? We have been able to get by for years in Mexico without learning Spanish except the basics. Any input would be appreciated.
