Dear Fleishman My husband and I had a lot of questions as well. We studied for a year before we decided to take the plunge and visit. We spent a couple of weeks seeing and exploring most all of Panama. When we reached Boquete by car we were sold. We visited a lot of developments on the way to Boquete and in Boquete. When we saw what was going on in Montanas De Caldera we thought WOW. Jane and Father really have it all together. Go on their website and email them and tell them that Mike and Darlene were telling you about them. Their knowledge is unbelievable. We have been their twice since buying and we are planning to retire next summer and move. I will try and answer briefly some of your questions. Health care: No worries. Panama has John Hopkins and the Mayo clinic. 99% of their Doctors and trained in US. A lot of Americans go their for their plastic surgery. A medical plan will cost you around $120. per month for family. Cost of living is 1/2 of what it is here. Dinner out for 2 eating filet mignon and wine $22.00. and its great food. Gas runs about the same. They have Costco. The water is fabulous. We have well water here at our home in Washington state and it is the best. Boquete is the same. Never have seen a scorpion or snake. I hate both!!! Most everyone has a cell. Prepaid card runs 20.00. Electric depends on usage, but plan for $45.00 month. No heat. Don't need. TV is cable or dish. We are getting a dish for 40.00 month. Maid runs $150.00 a month (5 days at 8 hrs a day)As an Expat you receive 20 years free taxes. Everything you do, you show your Penionado Visa and receive an average 25% off everything. Dining, food, just about everything. You might want to Google Retirement in Panama, or retiring to Panama or benefits to retiring to Panama. Hope this helps. We've had no issues with Bugs at all. I got a bite by a bug, not sure what it was, it just felt like mosquito. Have had 4 mosquito type bites in 3 weeks. In Washington I get eaten alive...
Honestly is Panama a nice place to retire to?
John You bet...We leave this summer. Just bought a home in Boquete, Panama. At Montanas De Caldera. Go to their website and see. We are very excited and will be able to live very well down there with our SS and Pensions. Here in the states we can't afford medical premiums, down there we get great coverage very cheap compared to the U.S. Check out all the different web sites that talk about retiring to Panama.
Hi, Just read ur posts A man was saying the opposite. They take advantage of Americans, contracts are not fulfilled and they want more $$. We live in Pa. and are thinking of going there. We are 50.. I was looking at Gorgona & Coronado. Are all locals rude to Americans" We wnat to be in thr rural part or mountains. We have dogs and cats. How much is gas ther eno a gallon. It is $2 here.. Do they have American shows on tv? I chose Panama over the Dominic.
Kathy from PA My husband and I have made several trips to Panama. We are in our late 50's and we are retiring this year. I can only report on our experiences. We have NEVER been treated poorly down there. No they are not rude... They have been very nice and very patient with our stupid questions. One of the major reasons for us retiring down there is we can live very comfortable on a lot less then here in the states. Gas is about the same. When gas was 4.00 here it was 4.00 there. They have hi-speed internet and you will want to get satellite TV. Then you have access just like here. Medical is very good and reasonable. If you need any info on prices, just let me know as I have done a lot of research and have talked to a lot of ExPats. Great food, Good people. Thats a fact. Also, you do need to go through a local attorney to make sure all is on paper. Protect yourself from being taken advantage of. Just like in the U.S. (All on paper done legally) Attorney fees are not bad. Especially if you know what they run in the U.S. Hope this helps and Take a trip down there. we were in Panama City and did not like all the traffic so we headed up the PanAmerican Hwy to see more of the country. That's when we fell in love with Boquete. Look up Montanas de Caldera.
