Fried Plantain

Thank author of this post/commentI have often wondered how to deal with Plantain. I have seen it in the stores and wondered what to do with it. I have now found a recipe for Fried Plantain.

Cut plantain into lengthwise strips

Fry in pan, medium heat with vegetable oil until strips are lightly browned.

Put cooked plantain strips onto platter with paper towel to "drain"

Sprinke plantain lightly with sugar.

This is a recipe from Ann Marti's kitchen in the CZone and sounds absolutely delicious.

Thank author of this post/commentHey... how about putting the link next time so we can find all her good recipes.

However, I take issue with one bit of this recipe. No need to sprinkle any sugar on them... they are very sweet and delicious when fried until slightly brown. Maybe sure you use the ripe plantinos and not the green ones.

Although they look like Bananas they are nothing of the sort. Green or ripe, they are very bitter when raw (and some say they will make your teeth black if you could actually chew on it). The ripe ones have yellow skin with lots of brown spots. A banana that looked the same would be very mushy and probably rotten.

Thank author of this post/commentThank you for pointing that out. I wasn't aware of the difference either. For sure the next time you get recipes from online like this it would be great if you could post the weblink as well.

Well now wait a minute... maybe I should google it and see if I can get a weblink for it.

HURRAY! I had success. Hopefully this will post the Web Link when I post it. Well it wouldn't do it so I'll give you the google title CZone & Panama Recipes

Thank author of this post/commentSearching for those terms turned up nothing for me. Searching for Ann Marie's kitchen brought up a site, but I didn't find anything about Panama recipes or fried plantains. Why were you unable to at least link to the site if not the recipe using the web link and link title boxes above?

There is a similar Filipino dessert of fried plantain called the Banana Cue, here is the recipe for it:

Ingredients:

about 15 pieces of banana saba type

bamboo bbq sticks

half a kilo of brown sugar

half a liter of cooking oil

Procedure:

Peel your bananas. Heat your deep frying pan with half a liter of oil. Once the oil becomes very very hot, put gently all your bananas (it depends on the size of your frying pan). Cook your bananas by mixing them constantly, after about three to five minutes add your brown sugar. It will melt and caramelize. Continue mixing gently the caramel and the bananas. If you wish a caramel well melted on your bananas, you can continue cooking this for about five more minutes. Or should you prefer a crunchy sugar coating on your bananas, you should immediately cut the fire. Take them off one by one and let the oil drip. Skew them on your bamboo sticks, approximately 3 bananas per stick.

I believed I have tried eating on a plantain before thinking that it was just a common banana. My mother learned a dish from our the family's Filipina friend and it sure was delicious. forgot the name of the dish though.

Hi kleo, I think the name of that Filipino dish is TURON..

Well here is how to make a turon:

Ingredients

* banana

* brown sugar

* vegetable oil

* spring roll wrap

* white sugar

* water

METHOD

1. Quarter long bananas, thru cutting them in half, afterwhich, cut them lengthwise. Dip them to the water.

2 . Mix a little golden brown sugar and white sugar together and sprinkle over top wet bananas.

3 . Wrap in spring roll wrapping.

4 . It is optional to tap some water on spring roll and sprinkle sugar mixture over top. Thru this, it will create less "clean" but sugary tops.

5 . Deep fry until golden and transfer to paper towel on a plate to absorb oil.
