| Panama is one of the best places to live. No wonder there are a lot of expats who give positive feedback about their life in Panama. In buying a real estate in Panama it is important to consider some important things like the location, price, construction, and the like. On the other hand, some expats prefer to invest in resorts, apartments, condos, and so on so they can cater the needs of tourists coming to the country. |

| Can it be difficult for foreigners to buy properties in Panama? Are there many stipulations set up as red tape by the government? I have heard of a certain zone close to the cthat is referred to by the locals as the Green Zone, in that virtually everything there is own by the United States, including the best golf courses, hotels and other facilities and houses. Is this so? |

the most important thing to keep in mind when buying property in Panama is not to buy anything that you wouldn't buy in whatever country you are from. Use common sense. make sure you check everything out: that all the paperwork is in order. If you are buying ROP property make sure you have all the paperwork showing the full history of its sale and purchase. Ask the neighbors who owns the property and ensure that the person you are buying from actually owns the property. It is true people here sometimes sell property that they do not own (the old "do you want to buy the Brooklyn Bridge?" scam) However, these scams are easily uncovered by taking some simple steps. Buying property here is not as scary as many of the websites make it seem. But you do need to excise your common sense and caution. We have bought and sold ROP and titled property without a problem. Well, except that when you sell titled property you must pay a 12% tax to the Panama gov't - but that isn't really a problem, more of a pain in the neck and the reason we prefer ROP properties (well not everywhere in Panama, but in many places) Expert Page: Living in panama |

Hi there, taxes are different now, it is 5% (3% and 2%) in total that owners have to the government when selling titled property. |

Betsy and Reyn, thank you for sharing your insight. I am wondering (since I am from Costa Rica and formerly Pensylvania US) what the most common and popular types of home construction are available in Panama. Are you looking at homes built like in the States or more like houses built from materials common in Costa Rica? Also, do you also have any good stories to share about your property transactions? |
| "Housing in Panama"
Hello Estella, The most common type of house in Panama, like in Mexico and all of Central America, are cement block housing. However, here in Puerto Armuelles (as well as in parts of Bocas del Toro and the Zona in Panama City) there are a number of wooden houses. These houses are similar to the classic tropical houses up on stilts. We do have some good stories about our transactions. I'll have to save them for another time (no time right now) That is a good idea. I will definitely part putting some stories on our website as well Expert Page: Living in panama |
