About three hours ago a 5.1 to 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Northwest Colombie and the boarder of Panama.Thank heavens there were no reports of injuries or material damage.

I hate earthquakes. I lived in the epicenter of a 5.9 earthquake. I don't want to do that again if I can avoid it. It is wonderful that there are no reports of injuries.

Do you have any more info on the earthquake? I went to your link and it doesn't tell me much.

we felt it pretty good on the central pacific of costa rica. I was surprised the epicenter was that far away from us. we thought it may have been closer in location and stronger in magnitude.when you come from California like i do you think of a big one as 7.2 or better

Where is the link you are talking about Dustin? Why are some parts of the world prone to earthquakes and others are not. Is it some sort of natural phenomenon? What connection then do hurricanes, mudslides and earthquakes have in common. It is good to hear there were no injuries of any sort but I bet there was loss of property and other belongings. Are there normally signs that an earthquake is about to take place?

Yes, aboely, earthquake is a natural phenomenon.. I think that a place is more prone to earthquake when it is near or lies dirctly in what they called epicenter. However, here is some info with regards to earthquake:
n its most generic sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event — whether a natural phenomenon or an event caused by humans — that generates seismic waves. Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear experiments. An earthquake's point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypocenter. The term epicenter refers to the point at ground level directly above the hypocenter.

That was so on point Mike. A magnitude of 5 for an earthquake on any scale is quite alarming but luckily, there were no serious injuries. Since they are natural happenings, the best people can do is just take precautionary measures. Staying in hotels(for the case of foreign visitors)that are safe will be a major boost. I have once witnessed a tremor and did not like the experience.

Haven't heard about this news but since you guys have mentioned it an you provide some link to a news website or video perhaps? Well there are indeed some catastrophic and fatal earthquakes recorded from all parts of the globe, the question is are you prepared for the worst case scenario?

This news is absolutely new to me as well, but in an earthquake, or in any sort of natural disaster type of situation for that matter, we could never really predict the outcome. The most that we can do is follow procedure that was instituted due to past events and people have become a bit more wise nowadays, concerning the particular matter.

"Earthquakes?"
Ah, hate to say this but have you never heard of the Pacific Rim of Fire? From S. America through C. America then all the way up the N. American coast over to Russia then south down past China, Japan, Korea, and south through the island nations to Australia are found most of the volcanoes of the world and the major earthquakes of the world.
Have been in many in S. California when I lived there - hundreds a day but most not even felt. Two strong ones which did damage.
Anywhere on the Pacific Rim is earthquake country and no matter where you are a big one can cause considerable damage with loss of life. Remember Mexico City a few years back? A 7 story hotel where we used to layover was only one story after that earthquake. It just pancaked down, one floor on top of the other. - jb

I have not a single idea when the post had been posted Dar. Still, the information can prove to be vital, no matter the circumstance.

I also hates and fears earthquakes. And when i hear news about earthquakes and how it devastatingly ruins a certain place, i feel sad about it. But earthquakes are just part of the unpreventable calamities caused by nature. And we all have to live with it.

Earthquakes are so natural we cannot do anything to stop them. But there are ways to lessen the impact we can get from earthquakes. We just have to follow some instructions, mostly they are available for us to read on the net. Just make yourself ready in case there is an earthquake to come. This way you are assured that you, as well as your loved ones are safe. Good luck.

Earthquakes are devastating, aren't they? And just like what people say here, we definitely cannot avoid the occurrence of such natural calamity, all we have to do is to prepare our selves in case an earthquake hits us. This way, we can make sure of our safety and the safety of the people around us. Have a good day everyone and please keep those posts coming in, they are good.

Speaking of earthquakes, it is sad that Haiti had suffered a lot because of an intensity seven earthquake. I think there had been thousands of casualties reported and I bet there are still lots of dead bodies on those debris all over the place. I just hope, just like anybody else that the country soon recovers. Let us all pray for the Haiti people. Have a good day anyone. Ciao.
