| Easter in Panama In America we've pretty much stripped Easter Sunday of it's religious significance. Instead we've replaced it with the Easter Bunny and Easter egg hunts. This is not the case in Panama. Easter is a whole week of reflection. Semana Santa is a somber and reflective time. You can't buy liquor between midnight Wednesday and midnight Sunday, and loud music is illegal, so people escape to the beach to party. Each church has its own procession on Long Friday night. |
| Serenity from Toronto, ust t add to jour comment about Easter in Panama, Easter is also a wonderful family time for most panamians. We inherited some traditional foods from our jamacan grand parents (some panamanians are of west indian decent and have incorporated there food as part of our culture)The Easter Bun is a must for all panamanians at Easter. Sancocho, Bun (easter bun) and fish we love to share these foods with our family and friends, these food are to panamanians at Easter, like turkey to americans on Thanks Giving. I just wanted to share this with you, because Easter is my favorite time to be in Panama, it's such a wonderful experience to be there at this time of the year, it's a time of reflection, partying, family, all in one not to mention that the weather at this time of the year is magnificent down there. | "Easter is Indeed a Very Religious Event"
Easter is definately a deeply religious event in Panama. Every day of "holy week" different churches have parades throughout the country. On Good Friday, a number of the churches join together for a very large Parade in Panama City. This parade is full of marching bands, costumes and elaborately decorated floats. Thousands of people come out to watch, and to worship. It is an amazing experience to see. I have a slide show below. |
