I was surprised to find that since May of 2006 there have been over 10 significant earthquakes in Panama. To me personally that seems like a lot, but I live in a state where earthquakes are quite seldom.

Panama has quite a history with earthquakes. I've read accounts dating back to 1621. At least two were killed and 74 injured in an earthquake in 2003. Otherwise, Panama doesn't get the level of destructive earthquakes that other Latin American countries get. Most of Panama's quakes are in the ocean far from land.

I've never been to Panama but have spent quiet a bit of time in Mexico (prefer the pacific coast). We have enjoyed Mexico but it's getting busy, expensive and a bit violent for our taste. Hard to find anywhere with some modern ammenities without it seeming like Cancun or Miami. My husband and I are retired, late 40s and looking for a new place to spend 4 or 5 winter month out of the horrid cold of Michigan. We're water babies; love the beach and sunsets! We don't need wild nightlife but we do enjoy live music and what ever local "stuff" there is to see and do. We're looking for decent medical facilities near by and safe laid back no worries accomodations. As I said we're use to Mexico and understand that "be there in an hour" may mean sometime this week......or next. We thought we might fly down and spend sometime this Nov-Dec. Any recommendations and information would be greatly appreciated. Especially interested in what is the best way to get around....rent a car, taxis, buses? How reasonable is it to rent a car in Panama City and get out to the beaches? Any places to stay away from? Thanks in advance!

Natural phenomena have been occurring everywhere these days. It is a possibility that it is one nature's way of telling us about our negligence and destruction of our environment and the mother nature. As I've heard in some Christian believers, the "End" will soon come and the frequent earthquake reports is a testimony to it which is seemingly radical and preposterous. But whatever the reason maybe we should be concern in our environment and be prepare for whatever it will throw back at us. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
