More Retirees Seek The Good Life Outside the U.S.

With the first wave of 78 million American baby boomers reaching retirement, many will be lured abroad by a lower cost of living and higher quality of life. Some will want to return to their ancestral countries or to places where they once vacationed, worked or studied. Others will be enticed by retiree perks and tax incentives.

With literally dozens of appealing countries to choose from, narrowing the possibilities can be a daunting task. Here are three alternative destinations to consider.

If you hadn't yet placed formerly unstable Panama on your short list, you might want to. "The Caribbean and Pacific coast of Panama is like Florida," but less crowded with property prices about a tenth of the cost in many cases, says Chuck Bedsole, a Latin America real estate specialist with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Panama offers affordable real estate, a warm climate and great beaches. The Panamanian government has put together an impressive list of benefits, including 20-year tax-free status and discounts on everything from public transportation to restaurants to doctor's visits.

If you don't mind a little cold, Nova Scotia, Canada can be an attractive place to retire. "In addition to universal health care, inexpensive prescription drugs, and the last stretch of affordable oceanfront real estate in North America, Nova Scotia has the picturesque charm of historic New England," says Jo Davenport, an American who immigrated to Nova Scotia two years ago. "The weather is surprisingly milder than in most northen states", she adds.

Ever dreamed of owning a villa in the European countryside? Skip Italy and France. Both are overpriced. Instead, Jan Blazej, a journalist with eTurboNews in Zagre, Croatia, is keen on Eastern Europe for its low cost of living. Croatia, she predicts, will become a "new retirement haven". "More than eight million foreign tourists visited Croatia last year and the Croatian government is expecting more than 10 million in the next years." Indeed, its "Black Sea Riviera" is already attracting Hollywood types and other A-list celebrities.

No matter where you consider settling, do your homework. Make an exploratory visit and stay for a few months before purchasing an property. Be sure to talk with locals and expatriates living there. Most importantly, consult competent real estate and legal professionals before signing on the dotted line.

Thank author of this post/commentGreat article! I never thought about living outside of the U.S. after retirement. Yes, it's very tempting to move to Canada with that universal health care. I didn't realize so many Americans were moving to other countries.

Thank author of this post/commentI pay under $50 a month for health care in Montevideo. They don't have a national system or even health insurance. It is handled by the hospitals and you chose which one to become a member of.

Thank author of this post/comment"Medical Insurance"

Is there anyone in Panama or who has previously lived there who can provide some concrete facts about health care there? I have heard that its very "hit and miss". That there are many medical situations that they don't have the facilities to deal with and have to send people to other COUNTRIES, not other regions, but across state borders, in cases of emergencies! That sounds very under-developed to me.

Does anyone know what kinds of options are available for medical insurance cover there? Lee it sounds great in Uruguay only paying 50 dollars a month. Do you get good services for that?

Medical insurance in Panama is wonderful. I do not know where you heard that. We have made several trips before deciding that is where we are going to retire this year. We have already bought property and are building a home. They have Hopkins Hospital, Mayo Clinic. A very large percentage of their Dr's are trained in the U.S. I have personnally spoke with several retirees living there now and they say they get wonderful treatment. One of our friends, his wife, became critical and spent many weeks in the hospital and her sisters husband is a Dr in Los Angeles, Ca. he told him that she was getting first rate care. Probably better than she would have gotten in the U.S. due to insurance issues. He pays approx 140. a month for his medical plan.

Lots of U.S. citizens are now traveling to Panama for medical treatment. If you google "Medical treatment in the country of Panama" you should get lots of info. Also google medical care or medical insurance in Panama. Try it lots of different ways. You will get lots of info.

Good luck..

wow that's great news that a doctor from LA said the care in Panama is first rate, its always nice to hear it from someone qualified to make that kind of judgment, thanks for sharing Dar.

Do you know what companies offer medical coverage there? Maybe I could look some of them up and start my research on their policies and prices...

Sorry it has taken so long to respond. I have been very busy at work and can only go on line when I get a few minutes. I will come back later and give you some hospitals and ins. companies. I have reserach a lot. You can also try to Google: Medical insurance in Panama. Hospitals in the Republic of Panama. Buying medical insurance in the country of Panama. All sorts of wording like that. That is how I began my search. If you go to the individual hospitals, they will also list the insurance they carry and accept. Lots to choose from. Hope this helps a little

Thank author of this post/comment"Online or Real Life Research?"

Has your research been pounding the streets in Panama or online? I've found in traveling around South American for 7+ years (and a bit in Asia) that a lot of the claims made online are often exercises in creative writing... leaving many to exercise some creative living once they get to a place.

I think you need to spend a good six months to start to get the feel of an area. In 2 to 3 years (after you've rented a place AND moved out) you'll start to have an idea of the ins and outs.

A couple more years and you can start to feel if your life will be content or not.

Thank author of this post/comment"Health Insurance Policies"

No problem Dar. I only asked because I assumed you already had already signed up with someone for health insurance cover and could share your experiences with us, but maybe you don't have any experience with that yet.

I could just google "medical insurance in Panama" as you say, but like Jim says I find that brings up very gringo-oriented results and that the people in Panama use different companies and policies. Would be nice to get insider advice from someone actually there and using the medical system.
