I'm traveling to Panama August 3rd, to see what it's all about. Unfortunately, I was talked out of attending the International Living seminar and plan to be on a fact finding mission by myself. Of course I have a million questions but if anyone with any experience could give me some advice; I would certainly appreciate it. We are considering the move because I care for my elderly father and money won't last forever here in the states. Also, is it better to rent a car or use buses, trains and taxi's?

Do you think the International Living Seminar would give you a real look at life in Panama? Are you looking at moving to Panama City or someplace more rural? I don't think you could compare the two. If you are in Panama City you can probably live very well without a car. Rural locations is another story. How did you pick Panama?

Well, I guess it just comes down to the fact that it "appears" that Panama would afford me the ability to stay home to care for my dad who has alzheimer's and parkinson's disease. He can't be left alone and putting him in a nursing home would be (at this point)cruel. He would qualify for the benefits Panama offers and if the cost of living is more reasonable, then it might make sense for us. As far as living in Panama City; I'm not sure. I've never been to Panama before, so I really have no idea what I'm getting in to. Do you have any suggestions as to areas I might look at while I'm there? I was really thinking somewhere in the higher elevations, but not Bouquete. I appreciate you writing me back!

The best suggestion is to go and visit for a while... try to find a short term apt rental rather than a hotel so it will be more like you are living there.Panama City vs the rest of Panama is probably way different.

Panama has some very distinct climate zones, very windy and cool with plenty of rain in the mountains. Panama City is hotter and dryer. With an ill father, my suggestion would be to go to Coronado area because of the new medical facility there and it's closeness to Paname City's hospitals. Also, even the smartest foreigners get ripped off by criminals acting like legitimate business people. Last time I was there I heard too many sad stories from people who lost between $35, 000 to 150, 000 in fraud schemes. Never, never go on your own into any deal - ever. And always judge a living situation first by it's security. My mother died from alzheimers. You'll need help with his care so it would be wise to live among other expats. . Hope you'll find a "real" friend fast. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
