| HELP! Don't know where to start... early ret., small children, from the USA.... Hi everyone! This is my first post, although I have read a bazillion... finally going to just ASK the questions I want to and hope that SOMEONE in cyber-land can provide some information.... :O) First of all, we are in our 40's and have 3 children *12, 10 & 6* We live on the Gulf Coast in an area that is "city-like" yet has it's more rural aspect.... meaning that we are a small town but live like we are in a HUGE city.....big yards, tractors, ATV's ~ MY family has chickens and animals, yet...we have EVERY eating establishment/major department store within' a 5 mile radius.... We live about 45 minutes from the ocean, but have property 90 minutes from where we live that we prefer. The BEACH is a HUGE part of our lives. We have started to look into moving to Panama in an EARLY retirement stage of our lives but realized that our kids will still be "schooling" when we are ready.... we would like to physically visit Panama to explore the areas, but do not know WHERE to begin... I would like to GO sooner than retirement, as my husband would like to just get a vacation "shack" there SOMEWHERE and go there a couple times a year until the kids are in college....THAT IS TOO LONG! lol To be completly honest... I prefer the beaches of the Caribbean side of Panama, but I am finding that there aren't any that are listed for families to live safely on the Caribbean side..... OK~ here come the questions: ~Where is the best place to live if you have children (they do NOT speak Spanish, yet) ~best place to "fit in" and be able to find a school (private or homeschool WITH public)~ SAFE and ENJOYABLE to be accepted??? ~If we wanted to not be "SO CLOSE" to others... such as having a little space inbetween your neighbor, yet still be in a neighborhood... where do I begin to look? ~ I also like the convenience of being within' 15 minutes of some kind of store, pharmacy, medical center, school, etc... ~How long would it take to drive from Boquete or David or Panama City to the beach on the Caribbean side and are there even roads to GET you there???? *I am AWARE that these cities are in two different locations.... lol ARE there any SAFE places on the Caribbean side to live? (same questions as above) We plan on visiting in about 5-6 weeks, but I don't even know WHERE to go.... If you were ME... WHERE would you start your adventure? ~ THIS is my DREAM... to live on the REAL OCEAN, live the life that I have always wanted to live.... raise my kids and enjoy life. I love my jeans with holes, my t-shirts, flip-flops & my pony tail and NO HURRICANES ***IKE GOT OUR BEACH HOUSE!!! ;O( ***.... put me next to the ocean and I am in paradise... WE are in paradise... my hubby feels the same way! Please help me out there in cyber-land.... I don't even know WHERE to start! Thanks in advance! Hope to hear from ya'll soon! YES, we are from TEXAS! UGH! |
| "Caribbean and Safety"
You keep talking about certain areas being 'unsafe'. Where are you getting the information that it is 'unsafe'?I think that is a very hard to define term, and it's best to experience a place personally. I used to live on a street that the U.S. Embassy's travel advisories said was dangerous and not to stop your car, to keep the windows rolled up, etc. I found it beautifully pleasant and a great place to live and walk at any hour of the day or night. Once when getting out of a taxi, I dropped some money on the sidewalk. Someone nearby grabbed it... not to steal it, but to keep the wind from blowing it away. Now, I have no doubt that there are some unsafe areas along the Caribbean coast of Panama, as there are in all countries and regions. However, I doubt that the entire coast is ready to jump out and bite you the moment you arrive. A good deal of common sense combined with awareness is always a good idea. |
| "Thank you Sr. Glen"
Thanks for replying...and I haven't heard of anyplace being UNsafe, just want to make sure I am not naive in thinking that everywhere is wonderful. LOL ~So, If we could take a small 5 day trip, should we go to the Panama City area or the Boquete area first? I doubt that our time would allow us to visit both..... We have never traveled to Panama so knowing what we have in mind, what would you suggest? (Is it possible to take a "day trip" somehow and be able to visit both?) Thank you so much for any info. you are willing to share. :O) |
| "Also thinking about retiring in Panama"
This is also my first post. I heard nothing but great things about Panama (from friends and reading). I'm over 20 yrs in the US Airforce and can retire anytime. My only problem is that i have 3 awesome dogs that will have to relocate with me. I'm single with no kids. Are there any rules or info i should know about moving there with 3 dogs? |
Comment #401/14/12 09:24Puerto Armuelles: Beach Town | "Living in Panama with a Family"
JmeSea, We live in panama and we have 2 children, 5 and 10 years of age. There are alot of good options of where to live in Panama. Beach life was a big factor in deciding where we would live. It sounds like the same is true for you. We traveled for 3-4 months in Panama before discovering the place we wanted to live. In our search we were surprized how few places on the beach there is to live. Perhaps you will find the same. There a mostly little village/surf spots(eg santa catalina), resorty/vacation places (coronado), and of course Panama City. We live in Puerto Armuelles. It is a town right on the Pacific, a beach town. We love it here. If you want to send me a message, I'd be happy to give you some details. Another place that you might want to check out is Santa Clara. We have animals, the kids are learning spanish, and we are all having a great time. Keep in mind that Panama is not for everyone. You should rent before you buy. Either way you will have a great time treking through Panama. Expert Page: Living in panama |
